Global Learning Program
The Global Learning Program (GLP) – open to first year students only!
GLP courses are semester-long courses for first year students taught by an interdisciplinary pair of faculty. Selected participants--typically 15 students--explore a theme through the semester-long course and participate in site-based learning trips over spring break and in May as part of the course. GLPs are made possible thanks to generous support from Susie McCurry '71 and the Roland and Ruby Holden Foundation. Applications open in IGE’s application portal on September 5th, application deadline October 12, 2023.
Course fee: There is a $2,000 course fee for participating in Global Learning Program classes that will be added to the student’s bill during the first week of the semester. Scholarships are available for students who qualify for need-based financial aid at Grinnell and will be automatically provided in the amounts listed in the table below. PrerequisitesThe first-year GLP courses have no prerequisites.
DurationThe course is one semester long and the site-based learning travel components total about three weeks between two trips
Time of yearThe GLP on-campus portion takes place spring semester. The travels takes place during a campus recess, usually with one trip over spring break one trip at the conclusion of spring semester in May.
Arrangements will vary.
- Accommodations may include hotels, homestays, university residence halls, and apartments.
- Ground transportation may include buses, trains, or taxis and a lot of the transportation is on foot. Pack your walking shoes!
- Local visits while traveling are abundant. Outings in each location in the itinerary will be prescribed by your faculty leaders to complement the course theme and syllabus.
